How to Pick the Best Harley Davidson LED Headlights

If you are starting to notice that the headlights on our bike are not illuminating with the same intensity that they once did then you just might be considering purchasing a new headlight or new headlight bulb for your bike. Before you make the purchase take the time to consider the following things about the headlights you like.

Color Temperature

Some of you will be old enough to remember when all headlights produced a light that had a yellow tint to it. Yellow light is not as bright as white light, but yellow light will penetrate weather conditions like fog and rain more effectively than white light.

The white color of the light produced by a headlight can only occur when the color temperature of the headlight is higher than 4000 kelvins and lower than 7000 kelvins. Try to choose a headlight that is rated with 6000 kelvins to 6500 kelvins if you want natural white light that is not glaring.

What Lumens do the lights have?

In laymen’s terms the lumen is a determination of how much light the light emits. The lumen denotes how bright the light from the headlight will be. The kelvin tells you the color of light that will be produced and the lumen tells you how bright it will be.

The standard light bulb produces about 700 lumens when it is working at low beam and about 1200 lumens when it is working at high beam. There are LED lights available now that produce a lot more lumens than the standard bulb. The higher the number of lumens are the brighter the light will be.

Life Expectancy

It is common to try and compare light bulbs by their price. Today, with the new technology you have to compare the expected life expectancy of the bulb and not just the price. The lower priced bulbs may have to be changed every year or two while some of the more expensive light bulbs will provide light for periods of 30,000 to 50,000 hours.

There are only 8760 hours in a year, so a bulb with a life expectancy of 50,000 hours could last you 6 years if you never cut the headlights off. Under normal use that 50,000 hour bulb might last 15 years before it needs replaced.

You also need to consider what motorcycles the headlights are designed to fit. If your bike is not on the list of bikes they fit, you may be able to still use the headlight assembly by purchasing an additional ring, or mounting kit.

Legal Aspect to Use LED bulb in Motorcycle

There has been a lot of controversy surrounding the legality of using a headlight that has LED bulbs. The laws concerning the lights can often be confusing to understand and they vary greatly from state to state in the United States, and from country to country around the world.

Led lighting is much brighter than normal incandescent lighting. At one time it was illegal to have any lights on your vehicle that did not burn with a yellow tint. The yellow lights did a better job of penetrating through fog, snow and rain. The yellow lights did not produce the same glare as white or blue lights so they did not cause temporary blindness of oncoming drivers.

In 1993 the use of white lights as headlights was approved. The white light makes it easier to see when driving under normal conditions. People soon found that they could use yellow tinted lights as fog lights for the times they were driving in inclement weather, and the brighter white lights under normal conditions.

LED lights produce the brightest white light possible, and many states, and countries initially outlawed the use of all LED technology except for accessory under-lighting purposes.

Today the laws governing LED lighting has changed and many of these headlights are completely legal, but people have a difficult time deciding which ones they can use and which ones they are forbidden from using.

A good rule of thumb when choosing an LED headlight is to look on the packaging to see if they are listed as being Department of Transportation approved (DOT), Society of Automobile Engineers approved, (SAT) or E-Mark approved. These approvals will tell you that the lights have been reviewed and studied so they are perfectly legal for highway usage.

Final Note

Changing from original halogen or incandescent headlight bulbs to LED headlight bulbs will make a world of difference in the amount of light your headlight provides. If you primarily ride on city streets that are lined with street lights then the LED technology will not make that big of a difference in your safety, but people who drive in rural settings, or along roads with few, or no street lights, will appreciate the extra light the LED bulbs produce.

LED lights are brighter, they produce whiter light, and they last years longer than their traditional counterparts. They are worth the investment because they make your driving safer.
